Donald S. Sachs, 86, long term partner of Barbara Pellowitz, of Port St Lucie, FL, passed away Sunday November 5, 2017.

Family and friends are invited to attend his viewings from 6 – 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 13 and from 10 – 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 14 with a funeral service to follow at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home, Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, Pennsylvania with Pastor Jerri Carlin, officiating. Following the funeral service, interment will take place in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Petersburg with military honors provided by the VFW.

Don was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Petersburg, Pa., the son of the late Lester and Ernestine (Sharetts) Sachs. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mildred Anderson and Phyllis Keiser. He is survived by comate Barbara Pellowitz and two sons, Robert Sachs, of Mt Pleasant, S.C., and Daniel Sachs, of Georgetown, S.C., and his brother, Theron Sachs, of Mt Union, PA.

Family survivors also include a nephew, Dr. Stephen Sachs, and nieces Phyllis Ruth Powell, Carol Patsy, Janet Anderson, Kristina Anderson, Sharon Sawyer and Deanne McClain.

He was also preceded in death by his nephew, David Anderson, and  his niece, Mary Lynn Aldrich.

Don attended Petersburg school until his senior year when it closed. He graduated from Alexandria High School in Alexandria, PA. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Shippensburg State College and a Master’s Degree from George Washington University.

He served two years in Army Intelligence at the Pentagon.

Don had a long history of teaching business in high schools including 26 years in Lewistown, PA. He was a conscientious teacher and was well respected among students and peers. He retired from teaching in 1996.

He was active in the Lewistown, PA community as the Exalted Ruler of the Lewistown Elks.

Don had a zest for life, loved playing piano and keyboard while entertaining friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He very much enjoyed visiting friends and family.
