Richard G. Householder, 90, of Belleville, passed away at 5:04 a.m., Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Valley View Haven.

Born August 15, 1926, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Gertrude (Grubb) and F. Earl Householder.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, R. Earl Householder and a sister, Patricia Householder.

Richard is survived by: his wife, Maxine (Ramsey) Householder, whom he married on June 26, 1949; children, Dennis L. Householder and wife, Debbie, of Brick, N.J., Susan Kratzer and husband, Kraig, of Reedsville, and David A. Householder and wife, Evlynne, of Culver City, Calif.; grandchildren, Jarrett Kratzer, of Simsbury, Conn. and Zane Householder, of Culver City, Calif.; and a sister, Martha Hornberger, of Huntingdon.

Richard graduated from Huntingdon High School, Class of 1944; Lock Haven University where he received his bachelor’s degree in social studies; and later, went on to earn a master’s degree in library science from Pittsburgh University.

He was a WWII Army veteran, serving in the European Theatre from 1944-1946.

He was employed by the Mifflin County School District for 34 years as a social studies teacher and later, as a librarian, retiring in January 1987.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lewistown.

Richard was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Assoc.; National Education Assoc.; and the Burnham Lions Club, where he was deeply moved and humbled to receive the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the club’s highest form of recognition for humanitarian achievement.

He had coached junior high school boys’ football and girls’ softball.  Later in life, he enjoyed following grandson Jarrett’s teams.  He was an avid Penn State and Steelers football fan.   

In retirement, he enjoyed restoring older homes using his carpentry and masonry skills.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Sat., Jan. 28, at First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Third St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Randy Hughes and the Rev. Gerald Peachey officiating.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service.

A private family interment will take place in Birch Hill Cemetery, with military honors by VFW Post 7011.     

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Richard’s name may be made to: First UMC, 200 E. Third St., Lewistown, PA 17044, or to: Valley View Haven, 4702 E. Main St., Belleville, PA 17004.
