Douglas Perry Varner, 71, of McClure, Mifflin County, passed away at 8:40 p.m., Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Embassy of Hearthside, State College.
Born Jan. 31, 1953, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Harold Sr. and Nora Mae (Fisher) Varner.
In addition to his parents, Douglas was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Varner, and Nora’s companion, Kenneth Smith.
Douglas is survived by: his wife, Vicki (Smith) Varner; daughters, Sherrie Varner, of Juniata County, Carrie Hawkins, of Arkansas, Tonya M. Kline and husband, Ted III, of McClure, Heather L. Price, of Virginia; nine grandchildren, Mackenzie Pierce and husband, Alex, Kaide, Jaida, and Rayce Price, Kelsey Bender, Haven, Ryder, and Nathaniel Tyson, and Sarah Hawkins; a brother, Harold Varner Jr. and wife, Helen, of McVeytown.
He was a graduate of East Juniata High School.
In his early years, Douglas was employed at Overhead Door Corporation and as a mechanic at Empire Kosher Poultry. He later was the owner and operator of his business, Roofing Unlimited, for many years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors, and was a member of the National Rifle Association. Douglas loved riding horses and was a member of the Juniata Saddle Horse Association, Inc. He participated in team pennning, horse racing and horse shows over the years. He also enjoyed lure coursing with the sight hounds.
A memorial service will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm, Monday, April 1, 2024, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 North Main Street, Lewistown.
