David Stine Runk, 77, of Lewistown PA, passed away on July 2, 2019, after a well fought battle with cancer. Dave was born on Nov. 9, 1941, to Lillian and Hayden Runk.
After graduating from Rothrock High School, he went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and chemistry from Shippensburg University. Additionally, he obtained his master’s degree in mathematics and chemistry from the College of William & Mary, and his Secondary and Elementary Principal Certificates and Letter of Eligibility for Superintendency from Bucknell University.
In September of 1963, Dave took a position as a mathematics teacher at Lewistown Area High School. This role would eventually evolve into 40 plus years of service as an educator, coach and administrator, to which he was dedicated and of which he was proud.
Dave was an avid outdoorsman, as well. From fishing Penns Creek to scouting in Ferguson Valley and Cooper’s Gap for a buck, to traveling out west for hunts, he truly enjoyed his time in nature.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Hayden. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his sister, Elaine; his daughters and their spouses Maddie and Matt and Shell and Kevin; his son and his spouse Dave and Marybeth; his grandchildren Katy, Brooke, Adam, Ethan and Olivia; his greatgrandchildren Fitzgerald and Hayden; and three nieces and one nephew.
A viewing will be held at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, located on 200 N. Main St. in Lewistown on Friday, July 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service, officiated by Alan Kauffman, will take place the following day at 10:30 a.m. at Juniata Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Dave’s name to the Youth Field Day via John Czerniakowski (P.O. Box 381, Reedsville, PA 17084).
