Gerald E. "Sonny" Snook, 87, formerly of McClure, passed away at 3:50 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019, at Ohesson Manor, Lewistown.
Born April 15, 1932, in the Village of Wagner, McClure, he was a son of the late Burton R. and Ethel V. (Romig) Snook. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Carl M. Snook, April 28, 2016.
Gerald is survived by: his wife, Ruth I. (Goss) Snook; sons, Terry L. "Ted" Snook Sr. and wife, Jean Ann, of New Freedom, and Ralph E. Snook Sr., of Lewistown; grandchildren, Terry L. Snook Jr. and wife, Ang, Tera Baum and husband, Kerry Sr., and Trisha Galbreath and husband, John; great-grandchildren, Avery and Amelia, Kerry Jr. and Keith, and McKenna, Hunter and Ky; and brothers, Gary Snook Sr. and wife, Linda, of Lewistown, and Burton Snook, of McClure.
Gerald graduated from Lewistown High School, Class of 1952, under the school's vocational program.
He was a member of Dormantown Lutheran Church.
Gerald was employed in various occupational areas throughout his life. He first worked for Dan Miller, former owner of Kishacoquillas Park, at the Standard Steel dump removing cinders; at Lewistown Foundry; as an equipment operator for Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation; and lastly, as a wheel finisher at Standard Steel Corporation, where he retired with 21 years of service. He was also a part-time farmer.
He was a passionate life member and former Captain of Decatur Fire Company No. 1 and fire police, where he remained active throughout his life, and where he assisted in building the new fire house and the company's cook house. He also held memberships in other municipal, other county and Pennsylvania state fire and rescue organizations. Gerald also enjoyed attending antique tractor shows and often volunteered to help at their events.
A viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, 108 First Ave., Burnham.
An additional viewing will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 9, 2019, at the funeral home, followed by the funeral service at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Clark Kelsey officiating.
Interment will take place at Samuel's Cemetery in McClure.
