Larry Harshbarger Obituary

Larry Lee Harshbarger, 88, of Reedsville, passed away, Friday, August 23, 2019, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, in Mifflin.

Born July 30, 1931, in Yeagertown, he was a son of the late John and Rita I. (Bottorf) Harshbarger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Ann Lepley.

He is survived by his loving wife, Anna K. (Bittner) Harshbarger, of Reedsville, whom he married in June of 1958; daughters, Susan A. Kauffman and husband, Robert L., of Milroy, and Nancy L. Kauffman and husband, Paul A. Jr., of Belleville; six grandchildren, Mackenzie Bosse and husband, Daniel, Marla J. Kauffman, Lindsey D. Kauffman, Katherine M. Kauffman and husband, Adam Houtz, Benjamin Kauffman and wife, Sabrina, and Daniel Kauffman; three great-grandchildren, Noah, Jocelyn, and Mila Bosse; a brother, James L. Harshbarger, of North Carolina.

Larry was a graduate of Derry Township High School, Class of 1949 and was a 1954 graduate of Penn State University.

He served in the United States Army.

Larry was a life-long member of the Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Yeagertown.

He was employed at Standard Steel, retiring in 1991 after 35 years of service.

Larry was an avid Penn State and Philadelphia Phillies fan. He loved being outdoors hunting, fishing, and trapping in the streams and woodlands. He enjoyed archery hunting and especially loved the time he spent with his favorite hunting buddies at the McGuffy's Raiders hunting camp in Penns Valley.

He always loved to read and write.  After retiring, that love led him to become a freelance writer for a number of state and national magazines.  He was especially excited to be published more than once in PA Game News.  Later he published two books, Another Time, Another Place and Turkey Hunting, Then and Now.

His greatest love was his wife and family.  He was the leader of many family hikes and excursions and for over 30 years he took them all on a two-week family vacation to Sunset Beach, NC where they made memories to last a lifetime.  He shared his love of the outdoors with his children and grandchildren for which they will be eternally grateful.
