Robert A. "Bob" Hackenberry, 98, of Pleasant Acres, Lewistown, passed away at 6:35 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018, at Valley View Haven Rehab, Belleville.
Born July 23, 1920, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Charles and Carrie (Getz) Hackenberry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his wife, Anna E. "Betty" (Jordan) Hackenberry, on Aug. 22, 1996; five brothers, Howard, Elmer, Russell, Stanley and Richard; and a son-in-law, Robert Slemons.
Surviving are: three daughters, Carole A. (Jack) Shuey and Patricia L. (Alfred) Fultz, both of Lewistown, and Deborah R. Slemons, of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jack Shuey Jr. and wife, Rebecca, of Oswego, N.Y., Jeanne Peters and husband, Andy, of Huntingdon, Fred Fultz and wife, Tish, of Belleville, Cherie Zimmerman and husband, Rob, of Lewistown, Bob Slemons and wife, Kandi, of Reedsville, and Angela Dietrich and husband, Tim, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothea Hackenberry, of Lewistown; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob graduated from Lewistown High School, Class of 1938, and was a WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Army Infantry, stationed in the South Pacific.
He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Lewistown.
Bob retired in 1983 from Standard Steel after 44 years of service, where he worked his way up to become supervisor of the melt shop in Burnham and Latrobe.
He enjoyed spending his retirement years with his children and grandchildren at Raystown Lake, Huntingdon, and made many camper friends from all over Pennsylvania. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, at Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 106 N. Dorcas St., Lewistown, with Father Jayaseelan Amalanathan officiating.
Interment with military honors will take place at Mount Rock Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bob's memory may be made to the Sacred Heart of Jesus School or Church, 9 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
