Virgie M. Hackenberg Peterson, 95, of Lewistown, went to be with her Lord and Savior at 12:16 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2019, at Valley View Haven.
Born Sept. 11, 1923, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Newton Hamilton and Carrie A. (Dunn) Bishop. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her first husband, James Hackenberg Sr., second husband, Glenn Peterson, and companion, Stanford Haines; daughters, Judith A. Soult and Trudy E. Brown; grandchildren, James Brown, John Brown, Lauren Petrillo, and Jamie Fisher; daughter-in-law, Darlyn Hackenberg; and four brothers and four sisters.
Virgie is survived by: sons, James C. Hackenberg Jr. and wife, Marcia, of Strodes Mills, and Robert "Bob" W. Hackenberg Sr., of Lewistown; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; sisters, Dollie Stricker, of Lewistown, and Lorraine Haines, of Beaver Springs; and special son-in-law, George Soult, of McVeytown, who was always by her side.
Virgie was a member of Lake Park United Methodist Church in Lewistown, and most recently attended Centre Union Church at its former location in Strodes Mills.
In her early years, she worked at the American Viscose Corporation. Later, she was a crossing guard for the Lewistown Borough Police Department for 12 years.
Virgie was a life member of VFW Post 7011, Lewistown, and oldest member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was always dressed to the nines and loved karaoke and singing.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown.
A second viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the funeral home, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., with Pastor David Pennebaker officiating.
Interment will take place at Lind Memorial Cemetery, Green Ave., Lewistown.
