Charles E. “Charlie” Gross, 85, of Lewistown, passed away at 11 p.m., Friday, March 15, 2024, at his home.
Born Oct. 20, 1938, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Virgil W. and Margaret (Druckemiller) Lyter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Bonnie Brown, John DeArment, and Connie Gross.
Charlie is survived by: daughter, Cathy Hetrick and husband, Jason, of Spring Mills; grandchildren, Willie and Olivia Hetrick; sisters, Tami Lyter, of Lewistown, and Patti Lyter, of Port Royal; and his dear friend, Rosy Parson, of Lewistown.
Charles was a Lewistown High School graduate, Class of 1958.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Hornet from May 1960 to April 1964.
Charlie retired from Marlette Homes as a builder.
Charlie loved the outdoors, camping and gardening. In his earlier years, he served as a deputy law enforcement officer for the Pennsylvania Fish Commission and worked closely with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Charlie was instrumental in starting local recreational organizations and activities including Shawnee Archers and building the Shawnee range, the Penns Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited, the Mill Creek Gun Raffle, and the annual snake hunt at Cross Fork.
Celebrations of Charlie’s Life will be held at later dates in Lewistown and Cross Fork. Details will be announced.
