David L. Bolger Sr., 82, of Granville Township, Lewistown, passed away at 9 p.m., Sunday, April 7, 2019, at his home.
Born Dec. 2, 1936, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Frank and Mary (McMullin) Bolger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary (Lloyd) McMullin Bartlett, who lovingly raised him at her Juniata Terrace home.
David is survived by: children, David L. Bolger Jr., Daniel J. Bolger, and Denise A. Bolger and husband, Shawn Howe, all of Lewistown; their mother, Nancy Shilling, of Lewistown; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his loyal Maine Coon cat, Bubber.
He served in the Air Force from March 1954 to Oct. 1957, and the Air Force Reserve. He later reentered military service and retired from the Army National Guard as a Sergeant First Class after serving 15 years from 1977 to 1992, and with more than 27 years of combined service.
David loved auto racing and started racing modifieds, then sprints at Port Royal Speedway and other nearby raceways. He later became a racecar owner and was content to watch from the sidelines. His greatest achievement came at Port Royal on June 23, 2007 when #18 found victory with Daryl Stimeling behind the wheel. David was also a talented artist. He enjoyed painting anything that inspired him and some of his works are breathtaking.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
A memorial service will be held later, with details to be announced.
Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in David's memory may be made to: Mom's Pets, 1065 Acorn Lane, James Creek, PA 16657, or to a local animal shelter of one's choice.
