Joseph E. Rodgers, 82, of Lewistown, died on Sunday, March 14, 2021.
Born Oct. 24, 1938, he was the son of the late Joseph and Frances (Fleming) Rodgers. Joseph was preceded in death by his brother, Duane Fleming, two sisters, Barbara Null and Sara Schell, and a grandson, Joey Stoner.
Surviving are: his wife of 60 years, Sylvia (Deer) Rodgers; four daughters, Carlene and her companion, Daniel, of Lewistown, Donna and her husband, Ahmed, of Virginia, Joann and her husband, Aizaz, of Virginia, and Trina and her husband, David, of Lewistown; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Joseph was Catholic by faith.
He was a 1959 graduate of Chief Logan High School.
While living in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was employed as an operating engineer for Blandford Construction, Local 15. After moving back to Lewistown, he was employed by Aumiller Auto Wreckers for 14 years. He then worked for the Juniata Foundation for the Blind in Lewistown.
Joseph was President and Captain of the Derry Township Fire Police for 25 years. He was in charge of the annual Derry Township Fish Tournament and the sale of Christmas trees and Easter flowers at Kish Park. He was also fire police to Decatur, Highland Park, Mifflin County, Burnham, and East Derry Fire Companies. Joseph was a member of Lewistown Moose Lodge 143, where he loved to dance with his wife. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and his two cats.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 North Main St., Lewistown.
A private funeral service will follow at 8 p.m., at the Funeral Home.
Due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, facial masks and social distancing will be required for anyone attending the services.
