Larry Fisher Obituary

Larry A. Fisher, 86, of Lewistown, passed away at 11:36 p.m., Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital.

Born May 13, 1936, in Granville, he was a son of the late Richard C. and Zelda M. (Fisher) Fisher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard “Jack”, Ronald, Norman “Ray” and Herb Fisher, sisters, Louise Grose and Connie Crosson, and a granddaughter, Victoria “Tori” Fisher.

Larry is survived by: loving wife of 67 years, Martha “Marty” A. (Forsythe) Fisher; four children, Robin L. Fisher, of Mechanicsburg, L. Douglas Fisher and wife, Deborah S. (Smith), of Lewistown, Michael K. Fisher, of Granville, and Scott A. Fisher and wife, Mary (Carlstrom), of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren, Nikol Fisher, Joshua Yale, Coby Huff, Kaitlyn Fisher, Chase Smith, Benjamin Fisher, Halle Fisher, Paige (Brannon) Yeater, Lillian Fisher, Taylor (Brannon) Wertz, Abigail Fisher, Noah Fisher and Charlotte Fisher; nine great-grandchildren; and brother, Ralph “Spike” Fisher, of Granville.

He was a Lewistown High School graduate, Class of 1954.

Larry was a member of Granville United Methodist Church, Granville United Methodist Men’s Club, and Lewistown Fraternal Order of Elks Lodge No. 663.

He retired from United Parcel Service (UPS) with 33 years of service.  During that time, he also owned Fisher’s Grocery Store in Granville.  Following his retirement, he worked at Tuscarora Intermediate Unit, Mifflin-Juniata Special Needs Center, and J&D Transportation Services, where he assisted and supported individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities.

Larry enjoyed camping with his grandchildren and taking hunting trips with family and friends, locally and in upstate Pa. and N.Y.  He was passionate about things from his childhood, family, farm, his church and growing up in Granville.  He loved all things sports related and followed his beloved Penn State Nittany Lions to Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, to the Orange Bowl in Miami, and most memorable, the 1982 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans where PSU won their first national championship.  He also attended many Philadelphia Phillies games.  Larry especially looked forward each summer to family beach trips to Avalon, N.J.  One memorable trip took place in June of 1972 when he and the family packed up and traveled across the country visiting various national parks, monuments and landmarks, dodging the effects of Hurricane Agnes back home.  Larry’s work with the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit gave him the opportunity to work with local youth helping to restore Penn Roosevelt Dam which he thoroughly enjoyed.  Additionally, his involvement at the Mifflin-Juniata Special Needs Center allowed him to “star” on stage at the annual Lip Sync Talent Show.

If you ever met “Big Al”, he left quite an impression upon those he encountered.  He loved teaching Sunday School classes and touched the lives of many.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, at Granville UMC, 1346 North River Road, Granville, followed by the memorial service at 11 a.m., with Reverend G. Edward “Ted” Corcelius officiating.

Interment will take place at a later date at Pleasant View Cemetery, U.S. Highway 522 South, McVeytown.
