Obituary

Richard Paul Miller, 88, of Lewistown, went to be with Jesus at 7:25 a.m., Thursday, May 12, 2022, at Valley View Haven, Belleville.

Born April 24, 1934, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late David H. and Bertha M. (Kauffman) Miller.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Miller, and sisters, Zelda Cramer and Doris Bratton.

Surviving are: the love of his life and wife of 66 years, Shirley Ann (Hutchinson) Miller; children, Kimbra Napier and husband, Thomas Sheaffer, of Lewistown, Brian Miller and wife, Yvonne “Yonnie”, of Millersburg, Lisa Marker and husband, Steven, of Reedsville, and Karen Goodman, of Ephrata; nine grandchildren, Kendra Fonash and husband, Stephen, Kara Kauffman and husband, Tyler, Alexa Zakaszewski and husband, Ivan, Kyle Miller and wife, Claire, Ryan Marker, Emily Petersen and husband, Ryan, Shawn Marker and wife, Kara, Joshua Goodman and wife, Nikki, and Alicia Goodman and fiancé, Ryan Davies; four step-grandchildren, Eric Sheaffer, Melissa Kauffman, Jennifer Sheaffer and fiancé, Kristian Bulick, and Preston Bergey and wife, Bridget; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph Miller and wife, Beverly, of Burnham; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, William Hutchinson and wife, Paula, of McVeytown; and beloved neighbors, John and Tracy Williams.

Richard was a graduate of Lewistown Joint High School, Class of 1952, and a member of the first undefeated, untied football team in the school’s history in 1951-1952.

He was a U.S. Navy Air Corps veteran who served during the Korean Conflict from Dec. 1952 to Nov. 1956 as an Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class.  He was stationed at Atsugi, Japan and at the Naval Air Station in Alameda, Calif., where he and Shirley were married June 14, 1955.  After reconnecting many years later with his best man, Bill Ashburn and wife, Shirley, of Huntsville, Ala., he and Shirley made several trips to visit them and remained in touch.

Richard was a lifetime member of Lake Park United Methodist Church where he served as Superintendent, Chairman of the Church Council, Chairman of Trustees, and teacher of the “Win Another” Adult Class from 1973 to 2020.  He also delighted in being the unofficial church painter and handyman.

He retired from Standard Steel Corporation in 1996 with 34 years of service as head roller in the Wheel Mill.

Richard was a member of the Juniata Valley YMCA, Silver Sneakers Program, bowling team and a participant in the local senior games.  He was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and his yard was always pristine.  He loved holidays and was known for his elaborate Christmas light display, which shone brightly in Strodes Mills for many years until 2020. We all felt a touch of sadness when the lights were no longer there, and knew he was slowing down.

His family and extended church family were always his top priority.  He enjoyed attending class reunions and men’s breakfasts, and the many visits he received, especially from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, meant the world to him.  He was a wonderful husband and father who taught us to enjoy the brief train ride we are on, love deeply, forgive, and offer the best of who we are.

A viewing will be held from 10 – 11 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2022, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 North Main Street, Lewistown, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., with Rev. William “Bill” Kuhn officiating.

Interment will take place at Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown, with military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7011, Lewistown, and Fort Indiantown Gap Funeral Honors Team, Annville.
