Roy Aurand Obituary

Roy Leon Aurand, 92, of Lewistown, entered into eternal glory on February 24, 2024.

Roy, also affectionately referred to by family as Sonny, was born in Mifflin County, to the late Roy E. Aurand and Anna Mary (Klinger) Aurand on January 12, 1932. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Roberta Jean (Peeler) Aurand on June 6, 2019, a brother-in-law, John Peeler, and sister-in-law, Dale Peeler, and his two cherished dogs, Abby and Sandy.

Roy is survived by children, Sharon (Ross) Brode of Reedsville, Leslie (Mark) Fink of Lewistown and Joe (Lynn) Aurand of Lewistown, grandchildren, Kristie (Robert) McKnight of Reedsville, Dustin (Jennifer) Fink of North Carolina, Jillian (Dan) Kochenderfer of Lewistown, Caleb (Sharon) Aurand of Texas, Michael (Alex Strunk) Brode of Florida, Hannah Aurand and fiancée Tara Garst  of Maryland, and David (Brooke) Aurand of Hershey and great-grandchildren, Austin, Logan, Marlo, Brody, Crue, Lila, Aven, Selah, Grace, Ava, Carson, Noah and Luke and brother-in-law, Bill Shoop and sister-in-law, Carolyn Shoop of Belleville and extended family.

Roy coined himself as a “farm boy” who grew up in Alfarata and Derry Township. As a high school senior, Roy was featured on the cover of a national magazine, “Country Gentlemen,” for his first-place ribbon awarded for his Hereford steer at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. He was a graduate of Derry Township High School in 1950.

Roy honorably served our country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1950 – 1954. He served aboard a cruiser attack ship, the USS Los Angeles (CA – 135) as a Gunner’s Mate. Roy worked at US Steel in Fairless Hills for a brief period. He was a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University in 1961, with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. Roy was employed at the Lewistown YMCA as a counselor and an educator at Kishacoquillas High School and itinerant physical education instructor at elementary schools in the Kish area, retiring in 1992.

Roy was proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren and loved and enjoyed their company. He was a dedicated fan of Phillies baseball and Eagles and Penn State football. Taking care of his lawn was a labor of love…it had to be perfect.

He had a faith in God and his Savior Jesus Christ. In the past five years, that faith grew stronger as he found God’s comfort and strength after the passing of his beloved wife, Roberta. Since God comforted him so dramatically after his wife’s passing, he felt his mission was to tell others about what God did for him. Roy rarely missed the chance to share that message wherever he went even to the point of becoming physically weary.

Many thanks are extended to Hospice 365 team and the kind-hearted staff at Greenwood Village Memory Care for his brief stay in the “neighborhood.”

A visitation will be held from 10-11 on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home, Woodlawn, 200 North Main Street Lewistown, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Chris Lutz officiating.
