Samuel G. McCardle

Samuel G. McCardle, 90, of Pittsburgh and formerly of Struthers, Ohio, passed away at 8:57 a.m., Sunday, November 21, 2021, at St. Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh.            

Born Aug. 1, 1931, in Burnham, he was the son of the late John and Effie (Stong) McCardle.

Also preceding him in death was his wife, Olive (Fleming) McCardle.

Samuel is survived by: sons, Matthew McCardle and wife, Cathy, of Pittsburgh, and Michael McCardle and wife, Kathy, of Lewisberry; three grandchildren, Austin McCardle and wife, Liesel, Bart McCardle and wife, Brittany, and Hannah Rohrs and husband, Tyson; great-grandchildren, Talon, Selah, and Callie McCardle, and a new great-granddaughter, Hazel Rohrs, to be born in February; and his sister, Nancy McVicker, of Lewistown.

He retired from the U.S. Army on Jan. 31, 1969, at the rank of Sergeant First Class with over 21 years of service and was a veteran of three war conflicts; WWII, Korean War and the Vietnam War.  He served as a MP in Alaska, Armored Division in Germany and patrolled the DMZ in Korea.  At the time of his retirement, Samuel was assigned to the 809th Engineer Battalion as a utility foreman.  After retirement, Sam worked for HighWay Heat Systems and for the Wick Building in Youngstown, Ohio. 

Sam enjoyed spending time with his family and could often be heard yelling at his TV while watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins.  He had a deep love and compassion for dogs, particularly his faithful companion, Hogan.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021, at Mt. Rock Cemetery, Oakland Avenue, Lewistown, with Pastor Randy Traxler officiating.  Military honors will be provided by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown.
