Thomas A. Newman

Thomas A. Newman, 61, of Lewistown, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 7:01 p.m., Friday, October 26, 2018, at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Born March 18, 1957, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Mary E. (Miller) Powell.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by: siblings, Linda K. Cherry, on Nov. 4, 2000, Robin J. Newman, on Nov. 23, 2000, and Brian "Red" Douglas Newman Sr., on Nov. 22, 2017.

Thomas is survived by: his loving wife, Sally (Banks) Newman, whom he married June 21, 1980; children, Bethani Kanagy and husband, Vaughn, of Belleville, and Gabriel Newman and wife, Ashley, of Milroy; nine grandchildren, Caleb, Brianna, Elijah, Leah, Myah, Sarah, Lilly, Kensley and Annie; and siblings, Nancy Sowich and husband, William, of Reedsville, Vickie Kauffman and husband, David, of Lewistown, and Barry Newman and wife, Penny, of Long Beach, Miss.

He graduated from Lewistown High School, Class of 1975 and received an A.S. degree from Triangle Tech in 2004.

He was a member of Paintersville Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where he served in various positions and taught Sunday school for many years.  Currently, he was attending The Way Bible Church in Newton Hamilton and loved attending Bible study.  He led Bible studies at William Penn Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and was a regular volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

Early in life, Thomas worked at Lewistown Sportswear, then at Scotty's Fashions for more than 25 years.  He later became employed at the State Correctional Institutions (SCI) in Huntingdon and Smithfield and he was a correctional industry supervisor at the time of his passing.

Thomas enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid Penn State and Phillies fan.  He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and helping others.  Tom loved and served the Lord with all his heart and wanted to make sure all he knew would go to heaven.

A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at Paintersville CMA Church, 3195 Back Maitland Road, Lewistown, with Rev. Jerry Wise officiating.

Interment will take place at Paintersville CMA Church Cemetery.
