Virginia (Gin, Ginny,) departed this earth and gained her wings on early Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Brookline Manor after battling Alzheimer’s for many years. Born on July 27, 1941 as the oldest child to Glenn and Helen (Rittenhouse) Espigh, she grew up working on the Espigh farm located in Bratton Township surrounded by a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Before her parent’s death, Virginia, along with her siblings, nieces, and nephews, gathered at the farm every Sunday evening for a homecooked meal and visiting. Virginia was married to Alfred Turner who passed away in December 1994. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Espigh, a brother-in-law, Pete Crosson, and a great-granddaughter, Layla Sunderland.
Ginny is survived by her children, Deborah (John) Schrock of Camp Hill, Gary (Jackie) Sunderland, of New Castle, and a step-daughter, Sandra (Dwain) Lauver, of Granville. She was known as Nana to her grandchildren, Curtis (Darlis) Sunderland, Nick (Crystal) Sunderland, Lindsay (Neal) Sollers, Matthew, Erika, and Andrew Schrock, and Nathan Lauver. She had many great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. She is also survived by her siblings, Gloria Runk of Lewistown, Patricia Crosson of McVeytown, sister-in-law, Tooter Espigh (Milroy), Aunt Ida Hambright (McVeytown), Aunt Lois Notestine (Belleville), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ginny graduated from Rothrock High School in 1959 and began work at the American Visco and Fisher Electronics. After a few years of work, she enrolled at Empire Beauty School where she found her calling with cosmetology. In 1973, she became a small business owner - Highland Beauty Boutique for over 30 years. Until her retirement, she was co-owner of the shop with a few partners where she started with Barb (Stitt) Simonton and ended her career with Peggy Brought. She and Peggy shared many years and were known for their crazy fun and laughter in the shop where her weekly regulars would come for their hairstyles and entertainment. She loved to always have a good time. Ginny was known for all the latest hairstyles to make a fashion statement. Ginny loved to have fun!!!!
In her earlier years, Ginny was a member of Yeagertown United Methodist Church, Lewistown Moose Lodge #143, Fort Granville Grange, AARP, Lewistown Card Club, Red Hats, and Lewistown Country Club. Her passion was golf and you would always find her on a golf course and a regular golfer at the Country Club. In the winter, she bowled in the Moose Bowling league. She was an avid PSU football fan and a proud season ticket holder for over 20 years. She loved her seats in section ND at the North end zone and rarely missed a game or bowl game.
As the disease progressed, Ginny was very fortunate to have compassionate people who enjoyed caring for her. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the people who helped care for her: Brenda Baker cared for her for a few years while she lived in her home. The staff at Brookline Village(personal care) were more than just workers on the job. They truly cared for her and treated her like family. One specific worker, Mackenzie Hoke created a bond with Ginny and Ginny absolutely adored her. Ginny was truly blessed to have all of these people in her life.
Per Ginny’s request, there will be no viewing. She will be laid to rest alongside her late husband at Church Hill Cemetery. A private service will be held at the convenience of the immediate family. If you wish to donate in Ginny’s memory, please donate to Alzheimer’s Association ALZ.ORG to help fight this terrible disease.
Arrangements are under the care of Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown.
