Wilbur G. “Red” White, 91, died October 16, 2024, at his home in Reedsville. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 64 years, Janice E. (Brisbin), whom he married May 28, 1957.
He was born July 7, 1933, the son of Lillian P. Zerbe, and grandson of Isaac and Margaret Bostdorf, who raised him.
Wilbur graduated in 1953 from Burnham-Derry High School, where he was an outstanding football and basketball player. His football career continued at Lycoming College where he was a Little All-American and earned first-team honors on the All-Methodist team.
He served six years in the Air National Guard, one of which was spent in Germany during the Berlin Crisis when his unit was federalized.
He was employed by Lewistown Electric Company for 3 years and had a 33-year career as an electrician at Standard Steel Corporation, retiring in 1996. He also owned and operated a farm near Reedsville since 1973.
Wilbur was a lifelong sports enthusiast. He attended many high school and youth league games and faithfully supported local athletes.
He was a member of the Reedsville Evangelical Lutheran Church, Yeagertown Fire Company, and the Mifflin County Farm Bureau.
Wilbur is survived by his son, William White and wife, Patricia (Riden) of Reedsville, his daughter, Teresa White of Reedsville, his daughter, Susan Fox and husband, Alex of Reedsville, and son, Jeffrey White and wife, Cassie (Tallant) of Milroy. Also surviving are granddaughter, Alexis Ertley, granddaughter, Allison Torquato and husband, Ethan, grandson, William Fox, and grandson, Benjamin White and wife, Hannah (Templeton), and great-grandchildren, Olivia and Sophia Ertley.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Dad’s caregivers, Deb, Ruth, and Millie, for their wonderful help and for allowing him to spend his final days at home.
A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 North Main Street, Lewistown, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., with Reverend Carla Volland officiating.
Interment will take place at Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville.
