William H. Wilson, 98, of Lewistown, passed away December 26, 2023, at Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville.

Bill was born in Munson, Pa., son of the late Joseph and Lavina Wilson, and husband of the late Ruth L. (Woodward) Wilson for 66 years.  He grew up on the Juniata Terrace in Lewistown.

In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by a son-in-law, James Sickler (husband of Margaret), and five siblings.

Bill is survived by: daughters; Margaret Sickler of Enterprise, Ala., Ruth W. Kauffman and husband, Jonas B. III, of Lancaster, and Nancy W. Barouh and husband, Stanford, of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, Will Kirby, James Edward and Rob Sickler, and Lucas and Daniel Kauffman; five great-grandchildren; and his sister-in-law, June Taylor and her husband Richard, of Belleville.

In 1943, Bill was graduated early from Lewistown High School to join the U.S. Navy and fight in WWII.  During the course of his service, he survived four kamikaze attacks on the destroyer U.S.S. Evans in the South Pacific and witnessed the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima.

After the war, Bill was employed at American Viscose, FMC Corporation, and Avtex Fibers as plant operations supervisor. Retirement in 1987 allowed him more time to pursue volunteer activities. He was a member of the Chief Logan Lions Club, serving in several capacities, including president, and as a valued worker on the french fry truck. Bill was treasurer of NuVisions Center (formerly, Mifflin-Juniata Foundation for the Blind).

Bill was a devoted, lifetime member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry, functioned as the junior warden, actively participated with Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, and regularly ushered at Sunday services.

During his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and spending time with his family.

A visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 21 South Main Street, Lewistown, followed by the memorial service at 11 a.m., with Father John Harwood officiating.

Interment with military honors will take place at St. Mark’s Community Cemetery, Green Avenue, Lewistown.
